Published by Hutchinson in 2009 and in paperback by Vintage in 2010, the book follows seven interconnected characters whose lives converge at a single dinner party, including a hedge fund manager planning a catastrophic short trade, a young barrister, a lonely Tube driver, a literary blogger and a teenage boy drifting toward radicalisation. Faulks uses the week as a cross-section of pre-crash London, weaving together themes of financial speculation, virtual identity, religious extremism and reality television to take the temperature of British society on the eve of the global financial crisis. Reviewers compared the panoramic ambition to Tom Wolfe and Charles Dickens.
