Giới thiệu sách
Bad Girls Go Everywhere: The Life of Helen Gurley Brown is Jennifer Scanlon's authoritative biography of the woman who transformed Cosmopolitan magazine into a global publishing phenomenon and helped reshape twentieth-century ideas about women, work, and sexuality. Published by Oxford University Press in 2009 in hardcover, the book draws on extensive interviews and archival research to trace Brown's path from poverty in Osark, Arkansas through her years as one of Madison Avenue's most productive copywriters to the 1962 publication of Sex and the Single Girl, which sold two million copies in three weeks. Scanlon, a professor of gender studies at Bowdoin College, examines how Brown's editorship of Cosmopolitan from 1965 to 1997 created a distinctive brand of women's magazine that simultaneously promoted sexual liberation and commercial aspiration, often attracting fierce feminist criticism. The biography engages seriously with that criticism while presenting Brown on her own terms: a working-class woman who built a media empire on the conviction that women deserved pleasure, money, and ambition in equal measure. Helen Gurley Brown (1922-2012) ran Cosmopolitan until the age of 75.
