Dictionary of American History is a long-standing reference work tracing the political, social, economic and cultural development of the United States from pre-Columbian times to the present. The original multi-volume edition was edited by James Truslow Adams and first published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1940; subsequent revised editions, including the Scribner Library of American History compact volumes, have appeared every two to three decades. Entries cover events, treaties, court cases, institutions, biographies and themes such as westward expansion, slavery and abolition, the Civil War, immigration waves, the New Deal and the Civil Rights movement. Each article includes cross-references and bibliographic notes, making it a workhorse for high-school and undergraduate research as well as a starting point for general readers exploring American history in a single alphabetical reference.
