Martin Luther King by Alan C. McLean is a compact biography of the civil rights leader who became the most prominent voice for racial equality in twentieth-century America, published by Oxford University Press for young readers. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and ordained as a Baptist minister before emerging as a leader through the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956. His leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the March on Washington of August 1963 where he delivered the 'I Have a Dream' speech to 250,000 people, and the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965 helped secure the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965). King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the youngest recipient of that award at the time. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on 4 April 1968 at the age of 39.
