The Art of War is the English translation of Tôn Tử Binh Pháp (孫子兵法), the foundational Chinese treatise on military strategy attributed to Sun Tzu (Tôn Tử), a general and military theorist active in the late Spring and Autumn period of ancient China, around the sixth century BC. The text comprises thirteen chapters, each devoted to a distinct aspect of warfare and command, from initial planning and the conduct of war to terrain, the use of spies, fire attack and the calculation of force.

Beyond its classical military setting, the work has been read for over two millennia as a general manual on conflict, competition and decision-making under uncertainty. The 1988 English edition belongs to the wave of late twentieth century reprints in the Anglophone world that took up the text after it appeared in business and management literature in the 1980s. The most widely cited English version remains the 1910 translation by Lionel Giles, on which many reprints, including this edition's lineage, are based.
