The Japanese Lover by Rani Manicka, published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2010, is a sweeping family saga that moves from colonial Malaya in the late 1930s to the chaos of the Japanese occupation during the Second World War. Manicka, a Malaysian-born author best known for her debut The Rice Mother (2002), centres the story on Parvathi, a Tamil girl married off to a wealthy Malayan landowner, whose carefully constructed life is shattered when Japanese forces invade and a Japanese officer enters her household. The novel explores themes of forbidden love, female agency under occupation, racial tension between the Tamil, Malay, Chinese and Japanese communities, and the long shadow of wartime choices on the next generation. Manicka draws on her own family heritage in Malaysia to lend authenticity to period detail and domestic ritual.
