Ilya Ehrenburg (1891–1967) was one of the most internationally prominent Soviet writers and journalists of his era. The Second Day (1933), written after Ehrenburg spent weeks touring Siberian construction sites in Sverdlovsk, Tomsk, and Kuznetsk, depicts the raw reality of Soviet industrialization during the first Five-Year Plan. At the heart of the novel is a young idealist — a weak dreamer unable to commit wholeheartedly to the heroic collective labor around him — who becomes complicit in an act of sabotage and, overcome by spiritual failure, is driven to a tragic end. Published in English by Raduga Publishers, Moscow, the novel offers a psychologically complex portrait of individuals caught in the machinery of history — neither pure propaganda nor simple condemnation, but a rare and ambivalent Soviet-era literary document.
