When the Animals Could Talk by Ivan Franko (1856-1916) is an English-language collection of animal fables retelling the foundational stories of Ukrainian literature's most prolific nineteenth-century writer. Published in 1987 in Moscow as part of the Soviet export programme, the volume gathers Franko's reworkings of traditional tales featuring Mykyta the fox, the bear, the wolf and the hare, using talking animals as vehicles for lessons about cunning, courage and justice. Franko drew on Slavic folkloric motifs and the European fable tradition descended from Aesop and La Fontaine, producing stories that became required reading for generations of Soviet schoolchildren. The hardcover edition features full-colour illustrations by Soviet Ukrainian artists and remains a valuable artefact of late-Soviet children's book design, sought by collectors of bilingual and English-language Soviet literature.
