Sakharnov was a celebrated Russian children's author specialising in marine themes, his works include The Sea Stories and books on naval heroes. The volume traces the evolution of ships from ancient rafts and Egyptian reed boats through Viking longships, Chinese junks, European caravels, full-rigged clippers and steamships to modern container vessels and nuclear icebreakers. Each chapter combines historical narrative with technical line-drawings of hull cross-sections, sail plans and key innovations.
