Introduction

Denis de Rougemont investigates prejudices for and against Eros as they appear in our life, loves, and literature. Following the lines of his influential 'Love in the Western World', he traces the mythic and opposing themes of Tristan and Don Juan as exemplified in con-temporary fiction, in several philosophical trends, and in the modern image of "self."

'Love Declared' is the third of M. de Rougemont's works to be published in America. It was described by John Updike in the New Yorker, as delicious fare, memorably marked by its incidents of wit and insight, and was similarly hailed by Edmund Fuller in the New York Times, as a provocative and stimulating book. (Cover blurb.)

Good condition paperback which has been protected by a plastic laminate adhered to its cover. The top of the spine has been bumped but otherwise the protection has prevented any other damage. There is some light pencil highlighting in the introduction where the binding has also been cracked but elsewhere the pages are clean and the binding tight.
